Learning the Quran as a Path to Jannah: Authentic Hadiths and Their Sources
Every Muslim hopes for Paradise, and the Quran is one of the clearest paths to it. The Prophet ﷺ described, in authentic hadiths, what awaits those who learn the Quran, recite it, memorise it and act upon it. This article gathers authentic hadiths about learning the Quran as a path to Jannah, each with its source, and explains what they mean for us today.
1. The Path of Knowledge Leads to Paradise
The Prophet ﷺ said: “Whoever follows a path seeking knowledge, Allah will make easy for him a path to Paradise. No people gather in one of the houses of Allah, reciting the Book of Allah and studying it among themselves, except that tranquillity descends upon them, mercy covers them, the angels surround them, and Allah mentions them among those who are with Him,” narrated by Abū Hurayrah and reported by Muslim (2699) (Dorar).
Every lesson, every page memorised and every session with a teacher is a step on that path.
2. Recite and Rise
The Prophet ﷺ said: “It will be said to the companion of the Quran: Recite and rise, and recite slowly as you used to recite in the world, for your rank will be at the last verse you recite,” reported by Abū Dāwūd (1464) and at-Tirmidhī (2914), graded ḥasan ṣaḥīḥ (Dorar).
The “companion of the Quran” is the one who lived with it: memorised it, recited it and acted upon it. His rank in Paradise is tied to how much of it he carries.
3. The Quran Will Intercede for Its Companions
The Prophet ﷺ said: “Recite the Quran, for it will come on the Day of Resurrection as an intercessor for its companions,” narrated by Abū Umāmah and reported by Muslim (804) (Dorar).
4. With the Noble Angels, Even If It Is Hard
The Prophet ﷺ said: “The one who is skilled in the Quran will be with the noble, righteous scribes, and the one who recites the Quran and stumbles over it, finding it difficult, will have two rewards,” reported by al-Bukhārī (4937) and Muslim (798) (Dorar).
5. The Best of People
The Prophet ﷺ said: “The best of you are those who learn the Quran and teach it,” narrated by ʿUthmān ibn ʿAffān and reported by al-Bukhārī (5027) (Dorar).
6. Raised by the Quran
The Prophet ﷺ said: “Allah raises some people by this Book and lowers others by it,” reported by Muslim (817) (Dorar). The Quran raises those who learn it and act upon it, in this world and the next.
Learning, Not Just Owning
All these virtues belong to those who learn the Quran: recite it correctly, memorise what they can, understand it and live by it. That is why the Quran has always been learned directly from a qualified teacher, verse by verse, with correction. It is the method our teachers received in the Quran circles of the Prophet’s Mosque in Madinah, and the method we follow in every one-to-one lesson.
