What Is Tajweed?
Tajweed comes from an Arabic root associated with making something good or improving it. In Quran recitation, it means giving every letter its due articulation and characteristics while observing the established rules of recitation.
- Makharij al-Huruf: where letters originate in the throat, tongue, lips and oral cavity.
- Sifat al-Huruf: qualities such as heaviness, softness, whispering and strength.
- Madd and Ghunnah: measured elongation and nasalisation according to their rules.
- Waqf and Ibtida: stopping and beginning in places that preserve meaning and sound delivery.
